All concrete projects, big or small, will be constructed up-to-code and with the purpose of the concrete kept in mind to guarantee durability and strength to withstand the weight it will be bearing on a regular basis. 

If you're wondering what to expect during a concrete project, here's a quick rundown of the process- the work site will be properly prepped by digging the area to the required depth ensuring complete removal of any existing concrete, rock, grass, shrubs, etc. Concrete base will then be placed and compacted. Once the base is set, the forms will be set in place. The forms consist of wood framing and proper reinforcements such as wire mesh or rebar. The concrete will be poured until reaching the top of the forms, being moved around with rakes or shovels to avoid any air pockets or voids. The concrete will now be compacted, smoothed, and leveled. The surface will then be finished as preferred, and the concrete will begin to cure.

The concrete can endure light foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours of being finished and can withstand the weight of a vehicle after 5 to 7 days.

Pavers are an attractive alternative to standard poured concrete. Pavers, also known as paving stones, are single flat units of concrete, stone, or brick that can be used to design exterior floors such as walkways, driveways, patios, and even pool decks. Compared to poured concrete, pavers are stronger and more durable, and easy to maintain. 

There are many different types of pavers to choose from. Each type of paver is available in a variety of color, shape, and size. Pavers offer endless possibilities of design and benefits. Five Star Foundation & Construction also offers more environmentally friendly options such as permeable pavers. Permeable pavers are a natural way to distribute groundwater and rainwater without disrupting the natural flow. 

Once the desired pavers are chosen and the design is properly planned, the installation process can commence. Similar to the preparation of concrete, the ground will need to be properly prepped before placing the pavers in order for the pavers to look well and perform well. The ground will be excavated 4" to 6" in depth for walkways, or 8" to 12" in depth for driveways. The excavated areas will be leveled, followed by the placement and compaction of road base where the pavers are to be set. The compacted road base will be topped with bedding sand, at which point the pavers can now be installed atop the bedding sand.

If the particular paver design requires the use of a sealant, foot traffic is tolerable 3 to 4 hours after the sealant is applied. You may drive across or park a vehicle on the sealed pavers after 48 hours.
